You're Not Dealing With a Chimp I used to be a large David Letterman fan. Every night I would watch and if I couldn't watch I would tape the show. One of Letterman's favorite sayings then was, "Hey, you're not dealing with a chimp!" I was talking about that with a Catholic friend of mine the other day and it led to a discussion on creation. My friend, who again is Catholic, made the statement that he doesn't see how anyone cannot understand that we, humans, descended from apes. I said..."What did you say?" He went on to explain that there are many Catholics that believe in Darwin's Theory, that we all evolved from apes. He also said that he, and many others in his faith, do not believe the Bible in a literal sense, but as only a guidebook on how we should be living. I stopped and asked if he believed in the divinity of Christ, that he was indeed the Son of God, that rose from the grave so we all could be free. My friend said yes, he does believe that. I was truly puzzled. How can you follow Christ and still believe we all were once apes, that we evolved over millions of years? I have great respect for Catholics and don't know if what my friend said is true for all, but that's not the point. I just can't and will never believe that humans came from monkeys. I believe, and would hope all Christians believe, the words in Genesis: Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, [b] and over all the creatures that move along the ground." 27 So God created man in his own image, Monkeys are not mentioned. Scripture does not say God made monkeys in his own image. I really didn't say much else to my friend, but I do pray for him. Have a blessed day. We invite your comments.
