The Apathetic Christian

Someone told me of a bumper sticker they saw the other day, which read,

“There’s too much apathy in this country…but who cares.”

It seems we have become a nation no longer based on God, but based on apathy.

I’ve been a Christian for less than 5 years and have learned much in that time. I’ve learned that regardless of what happens, we must always put our faith in the Lord and live a life pleasing to Him. I’ve also seen how very fickle we Christians are. But the most disturbing thing I’ve seen in the past 4 1/2 years is the state of apathy in this nation, especially among Christians.

Amazing Grace Radio is part of the ministry of Christian Outreach Church in Morganton, N.C. Also part of the COC ministry is The Outreach Center. The Outreach Center is unlike any place you’ll ever see or experience. It’s a place the feeds, clothes, and educates over 1,000 families every week. All the services are free and over 99% of the staff are hard working, dedicated volunteers. But it’s amazing to me how volunteers at TOC come and go. Almost none of the current volunteers were there 4 years ago when I started. I wonder what happened to those who quit? Did they burn out? Did they get their feelings hurt over something? Or perhaps their favorite TV show airs on Tuesday night. Perhaps it’s a combination. But I suspect they have found, what they believe, are better things to do with their time. I could be wrong, but I would think Jesus would prefer us out assisting the poor and less fortunate and not sitting at home watching who’s going to be voted off a TV show or surfing the net.

This apathy is not just confined to TOC. It’s everywhere and getting worse.

More and more soldiers are hunkering down in their Lazyboy in this army of indifference. It seems more and more simply do not care. Many are glad to help, as long as they won’t be inconvenienced and it can be done while watching their favorite TV show. If I sound angry I’m not. I’m actually saddened.
