There's Just Too Much To Do (Insert Scream Here)

John Lennon once said life is what happens while we are making other plans. That is especially true in today’s world. As I travel around and talk with people each day, the one common theme I hear is that, “I’m just too busy, too much to do…too overworked, too many other obligations, just too much going on.” Do you fit into that category? Probably so. We’re even too busy to pray. I usually spend my daily prayer time at night. I must admit, if I wait too late, I will actually fall asleep praying. It’s sad that I don’t always give my Lord and Savior my best. It’s sad that I use my most alert hours working instead of communicating with him. On the day when we’re standing in front of the Lord giving an account of ourselves, we will probably wish that there was a better stream of communication with Him. I don’t think Jesus is into faxing, emailing, instant messaging, or text messaging. I really believe the Lord wants our best, including praying and talking with Him one on one. That’s why Jesus said in Matthew 6:6,

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.

Notice He said close the door so distractions could be blocked out and all the focus would be on the Father. (I think there’s a new NIV version that actually reads, “Go into your room, close the door and shut down your computer.” Ok, just kidding)

The bottom line is that all the technology available today that was supposed to give us more leisure time has done just the opposite. Sure, we can do all kinds of amazing things from our home computer. Many of us work at home and some of us even have our own website and radio station. Plus, we are always within reach via our cell phone. But all of this wonderful technology takes time and time that we should be spending with the Lord.

So today, I challenge myself and you to simplify your life for a moment by turning off the TV, cell phone, computer, and all the other distractions, and just worship Him…and try to stay awake.
