The Upset

Many are calling it the biggest upset in college football history. Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. defeated #5 Michigan on Saturday 34-32. ASU is coached by Jerry Moore (pictured right), who is a great coach but an even better person.

I'm an ASU graduate('79) and first met Coach Moore in 1990. We also attended the same church in Boone. We've written about Coach Moore before. ASU has won back to back 1-AA national championships. When I think of Coach Moore, the word that always comes to mind is humble. Coaches in any sport are rarely humble, but Jerry Moore is a man of humility. He is also a man of faith who always gives God the glory. His faith has spread throughout his team. Cory Lynch blocked Michigan's last second field goal attempt in Saturday's game to preserve the ASU upset. When reporters asked him questions during the post game press conference, he first of all thanked Jesus Christ.

Football teams typically reflect the personality of their coach. Sometimes that's not a good thing, but it is a very good thing at ASU. When I heard the score on Saturday I was proud to be a Mountaineer and excited for the team. But most of all I was excited and elated for Jerry Moore.
