The Gift of Communication

by Pastor Holly Johnson

Communication is one of man’s most powerful gifts. It begins with God as He communicated with and through His creation. The creation account shows us that God spoke into being the physical existence of light, vegetation, and animals. He conversed with Adam and Eve. In addition to His voice going forth, creation also in return responds. “The heavens are telling of the glory of God, and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech and night to night reveals knowledge” (Psalm 19:1-2). God’s nature as a communicator gives man, who is created in His image, a foundation for the discovery of language and communication.

Children have an innate ability to create language structure. I believe that this instinctive aptitude comes from the fact that we are created to give Him pleasure (Revelation 4:11, NAS) and that pleasure comes from audible prayer, praise, worship, and communication with not only the Father, but also with His other men. God did not make animals in His image, and neither do they have sophisticated communicative abilities.

The fall of man brings an explanation to the fact that communication, although vital to survival, is often the root of many conflicts and disagreements. I believe that sin is at the core of many communication failures and is the cause of wounds and scars that can be attributed to unkind, uncontrolled comments. The tongue is such a small organ, but misuse can wreak great havoc in the lives of others. The Bible tells us that the tongue is evil, full of deadly poison (James 3:8, NAS). Control of this member can only happen by submission to His word. Christ is the only true source of love, kindness, and consideration. As He takes possession of your life, and as his words abide in you (John 15:17, NAS), your communication will bring life to others and glory to our Maker!
