The Power of Touch

by Pastor Holly Johnson

The power of touch! It is truly amazing that the simple act of “touch” can evoke such strong emotions and healing power. Physical touch has a calming effect and promotes overall well-being. All humans have the need to experience touch. People who experience touch deprivation during infancy develop behavioral abnormalities such as depression, violence, substance abuse, and impaired immunological functioning.

The Bible tells us that Jesus reached out and simply touched the leper and he was immediately healed (Matthew 8:3, NAS). This was the first occurrence of the word “touch” in the New Testament and I believe that it is significant that Jesus was the one doing the touching. He showed His true love and concern by physically touching this man. Lepers were considered untouchable for their disease was highly contagious and thought to be incurable. Yet Jesus touched Him! What a powerful analogy for us today! While we are unclean in our sinfulness, Jesus touches us! His love and concern for us is greater than any social label or stigma, greater than any shame or guilt of our past, and greater than any condemnation that we experience at the hand of others.

The enemy has attempted to pervert the power of touch by using it for ungodly gratification. However, as Christians we should follow the example of Jesus and administer Godly affection to our friends, family members, and our brothers and sisters in Christ. It is amazing what joy a simple “pat on the back” and a hug can bring to someone who feels unloved.

My prayer is to be the hands of Jesus on this earth and that He would “touch” through me!
