Expressing Your Love to the Father by Pastor Timothy Fortune With Valentines Day approaching we begin to think about what we are going to do for that special someone. We may buy them flowers, chocolates, jewelry, or plan to take them out for a nice romantic dinner. These are things that we do to express our love for that special person. But how do we express our love to our Heavenly Father? He has everything; the earth is His and everything in it. So how in the world do we show that we love Him? Well to understand this we have to see that He is not looking for a gift that is fashioned by the hands of man. He is not looking for flowers, chocolates, or jewelry. He doesn’t even want a romantic dinner. So what is the one thing that God Himself is looking for? In John 14:15 Jesus said, “If you love me keep my commandments.” The one thing that God is looking for is the obedience to His commandments. To keep His commandments is the way we say and show our love for the Father. Walking everyday in the truth of His word is the one way we have of giving Him pleasure. When we show compassion for someone and extend a hand to those in need we are telling the Father, I love you. When we are kind, generous, and put the needs of others in front of our own we are quietly shouting to God, I love you. As we come to His house to worship we are expressing our love to Him. We can tell Him with our words that we love Him but if there is no action to back it up then we are just giving Him lip service. Love was meant to be shown, and this was started by God Himself. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son...” God expressed His love to us by doing something. He didn’t just set up in heaven and talk about how much He loved us but He showed us how much He loved us. So our love for Him should be expressed by doing what He says. Keeping His commandments is not a burdensome task. If our hearts are truly filled with love for Him then following His instructions is easy and fun. Yes, I did say fun! The world only thinks they know what fun is, but the ultimate fun is found in serving Jesus Christ. He is the giver of life and true life is only found in Him and that includes fun. He is not a stick in the mud. By your actions today what are you expressing to the father? Are you telling Him I love you by keeping His commandments or are you telling Him not now I have better things to do? Are you bringing Him pleasure or pain? It is your choice!!!
