Mistakes, disappointments, failures, heartaches, missed opportunities, regrets, and what ifs. Looking back upon our lives we could probably say that at least one or two of these words could apply. There are things in our past we wish we could go back and do different or change. However, that is impossible. What is in the past is in the past. It is history and history cannot be changed. Those moments that are in the past can affect you here and now if you allow them. You cannot change your past, only your future. The present and the future have not yet been written. You can walk around with regrets and what ifs feeling miserable and sad. Or, you can make a decision to forget those things that are behind you and walk in the newness of this moment. Paul said this “one thing I do is forgetting those things that are behind me and reaching forward to those things ahead.” (Phil. 3:13) Your life is not behind you, but in front of you. Don’t allow your past to dictate your future; start fresh. Today is a new day. You have never walked down this road before. God has great things in store for you today; He wants to pour His goodness upon you. Hanging on to yesterday is like that old saying, “Beating a dead horse”. If the horse is dead... what good does beating on it do? It does no good, just like hanging on to those old mistakes and failures does no good. By not letting the past go you are giving up opportunities in the present. Don’t let your life pass you by while you are looking in the rearview mirror. God’s best is ahead of you so make a decision to let go of the past and grab hold of the now living it to the fullest.
