Trust

by Pastor Timothy Fortune

One of my favorite scriptures is found in Proverbs, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” chapter 3 verses 5&6. I consider this to be a foundational principle that as a Christian we must come to understand. Our journey in the Christian walk takes us through many different environments. Not having the physical hand of the Lord to guide us through life we must learn to trust in His ability to lead us. The Lord knows the plans He has for our lives, from beginning to end. We on the other hand, don’t know what tomorrow holds. However, as we put more of our trust in Him, we can say with increasing confidence that our life is in His hand…knowing, that with out a doubt, He has our best interest at heart. He is more concerned about changing our lives than changing our circumstances.

As knowledge increases in today’s society, leaning not on our understanding doesn’t make since, or does it? He is the potter and we are the clay, can the clay tell the potter what is best for it.....of course not! When we don’t understand it doesn’t mean that God has abandoned us or left us out in the cold. It’s in these times, I believe, that God is the closest to us. We were never meant to completely understand everything. Most often, we think of trusting God and leaning on His understanding only when we are in tough times. No, we need to trust God and lean on His ability everyday. God has the master plan. Actually, if we lean on Him constantly then we could probably save ourselves some troubles. If the clay doesn’t cooperate with the potter then he must put more pressure on the clay to get it to conform to his hands. As we trust God and become more sensitive to His guidance then we can say, “I may not understand but I am going to acknowledge God in all my ways.”
